The Doves

Today they cleared the eaves where the Doves used to sleep.
When I found that they had flown away,
it took my power of speech.
My conduit to other lives, a wrinkle in time,
as long as they both persevered,
I thought we would be fine.

And now I’m going insane thinking about it!

I told you once that I’d never leave you,
but I told you twice, boy, that I never misplace faith.
You told me once that you’d always love me,
but we both know how words float like feathers on the wind.

Tonight I’m in my room with my back to the moon.
I don’t trust Her secret ways (and neither did you).
The rustle of the sacred wings…a whisper in the trees.
The night has place my broken heart in greater unease.

I told you once that I’d never leave you,
but I told you twice, boy, that I never misplace faith.
You told me once that you’d always love me,
but we both know how words float like feathers on the wind.

I told you once that I’d never leave you,
but I told you twice, boy, that I never misplace faith.
You told me once that you’d always love me,
but we both know how words fade like Dove calls at dawn.
